About the Tile & Flooring Calculator
The calculator uses a multi formula configuration. Each reported value is read as a direct evaluation of the stored rules with the declared field formats and units.
Formula basis:
Room area (sq ft) = room length x room width
Tiles needed = room area / tile area
Tile area (sq ft) = (tile length x tile width) / 144
With waste: tiles needed x (1 + waste% / 100)
Boxes = tiles with waste / tiles per box (typically 15 - 25 per box)
Cost = room area x (1 + waste%) x price per sq ft
Interpret the outputs in the order shown by the result fields. Optional inputs affect only the outputs that depend on those variables.
Formula & How It Works
The calculation applies the following relations exactly as recorded in the metadata: Room area (sq ft) = room length x room width Tiles needed = room area / tile area Tile area (sq ft) = (tile length x tile width) / 144 With waste: tiles needed x (1 + waste% / 100) Boxes = tiles with waste / tiles per box (typically 15 - 25 per box) Cost = room area x (1 + waste%) x price per sq ft Each output field is produced by substituting the supplied inputs into the relevant relation and then applying the declared rounding or text format.
Worked Examples
Example 1: Bathroom floor: 8 ft × 6 ft, 12×12 tiles, 10% waste, $4.50/sq ft
Inputs
With Room Length = 8, Room Width = 6, Tile/Plank Length = 12 and Tile/Plank Width = 12 as the stated inputs, the result is Room Area = 48 ft^2, Tiles/Planks Needed = 48 pcs and With Waste Factor = 53 pcs. Each value corresponds to the declared output fields.
Example 2: Kitchen floor: 12 ft × 14 ft, 18×18 porcelain tiles, diagonal layout 15% waste
Inputs
With Room Length = 12, Room Width = 14, Tile/Plank Length = 18 and Tile/Plank Width = 18 as the stated inputs, the result is Room Area = 168 ft^2, Tiles/Planks Needed = 75 pcs and With Waste Factor = 86 pcs. Each value corresponds to the declared output fields.
Example 3: Shower walls: 60 sq ft, 3×6 subway tile, 10% waste
Inputs
With Room Length = 7.75, Room Width = 2, Tile/Plank Length = 6 and Tile/Plank Width = 3 as the stated inputs, the result is Room Area = 15.5 ft^2, Tiles/Planks Needed = 124 pcs and With Waste Factor = 137 pcs. Each value corresponds to the declared output fields.
Example 4: Hardwood floor planks: 15 ft × 18 ft room, 5-in wide × 48-in long planks
Inputs
With Room Length = 15, Room Width = 18, Tile/Plank Length = 48 and Tile/Plank Width = 5 as the stated inputs, the result is Room Area = 270 ft^2, Tiles/Planks Needed = 162 pcs and With Waste Factor = 179 pcs. Each value corresponds to the declared output fields.
