About the Perimeter Calculator

Perimeter is treated here as a quantitative relation between Shape, Length / Side / Radius, Width / Side 2 and Side 3 and Perimeter / Circumference and Area.

The calculator uses a multi formula configuration. Each reported value is read as a direct evaluation of the stored rules with the declared field formats and units.

Formula basis:
P(rectangle) = 2(l + w)
P(circle) = 2pir
P(triangle) = a + b + c

Interpret the outputs in the order shown by the result fields. Optional inputs affect only the outputs that depend on those variables.

Formula & How It Works

The calculation applies the following relations exactly as recorded in the metadata:

P(rectangle) = 2(l + w)
P(circle) = 2pir
P(triangle) = a + b + c

Each output field is produced by substituting the supplied inputs into the relevant relation and then applying the declared rounding or text format.

Worked Examples

Example 1: Backyard Fence

Inputs

shape: rectangle dim1: 60 dim2: 40
Perimeter / Circumference: 200 units. Area: 2,400 sq units

With Shape = rectangle, Length / Side / Radius = 60 and Width / Side 2 = 40 as the stated inputs, the result is Perimeter / Circumference = 200 units and Area = 2,400 sq units. Each value corresponds to the declared output fields.

Example 2: Circular Fountain — Edging

Inputs

shape: circle dim1: 8
Perimeter / Circumference: 50.265482 units. Area: 201.0619 sq units

With Shape = circle and Length / Side / Radius = 8 as the stated inputs, the result is Perimeter / Circumference = 50.265482 units and Area = 201.0619 sq units. Each value corresponds to the declared output fields.

Example 3: Hexagonal Tile Border

Inputs

shape: regular_polygon dim1: 3 n_sides: 6
Perimeter / Circumference: 18 units. Area: 23.3827 sq units

With Shape = regular_polygon, Length / Side / Radius = 3 and Number of Sides = 6 as the stated inputs, the result is Perimeter / Circumference = 18 units and Area = 23.3827 sq units. Each value corresponds to the declared output fields.

Example 4: L-Shaped Room Baseboard

Inputs

shape: rectangle dim1: 20 dim2: 15
Perimeter / Circumference: 70 units. Area: 300 sq units

With Shape = rectangle, Length / Side / Radius = 20 and Width / Side 2 = 15 as the stated inputs, the result is Perimeter / Circumference = 70 units and Area = 300 sq units. Each value corresponds to the declared output fields.

Common Use Cases

  • Measure fencing needed for a yard
  • Calculate baseboard length for a room
  • Find length of border for a garden
  • Determine wire length for a fence outline
