About the Ideal Body Weight Calculator

Ideal Body Weight is treated here as a quantitative relation between Sex and Height and Devine Formula, Robinson Formula, Miller Formula and Hamwi Formula.

The calculator uses a multi formula configuration. Each reported value is read as a direct evaluation of the stored rules with the declared field formats and units.

Formula basis:
All formulas use height in inches; first 5 feet = 60 inches as base.
Divine: Men = 50 + 2.3 x (inches over 5 ft); Women = 45.5 + 2.3 x (inches over 5 ft)
Robinson: Men = 52 + 1.9 x (inches over 5 ft); Women = 49 + 1.7 x (inches over 5 ft)
Miller: Men = 56.2 + 1.41 x (inches over 5 ft); Women = 53.1 + 1.36 x (inches over 5 ft)
Hamwi: Men = 48.1 + 2.7 x (inches over 5 ft); Women = 45.4 + 2.27 x (inches over 5 ft)
Healthy BMI Range = 18.5 - 24.9 x Height^2 (m^2)

Interpret the outputs in the order shown by the result fields. Optional inputs affect only the outputs that depend on those variables.

Formula & How It Works

The calculation applies the following relations exactly as recorded in the metadata:

Each output field is produced by substituting the supplied inputs into the relevant relation and then applying the declared rounding or text format.

Worked Examples

Example 1: Average US Male — 5'10" (178 cm)

Inputs

sex: male height_cm: 178
Devine Formula: 73.2 kg. Robinson Formula: 71.1 kg. Miller Formula: 70.4 kg. Hamwi Formula: 75.3 kg. Average IBW: 72.5 kg. Healthy BMI Range Low: 58.6 kg. Healthy BMI Range High: 78.9 kg

With Sex = male and Height = 178 as the stated inputs, the result is Devine Formula = 73.2 kg, Robinson Formula = 71.1 kg and Miller Formula = 70.4 kg. Each value corresponds to the declared output fields.

Example 2: Average US Female — 5'4" (163 cm)

Inputs

sex: female height_cm: 163
Devine Formula: 55.1 kg. Robinson Formula: 56.1 kg. Miller Formula: 58.8 kg. Hamwi Formula: 54.9 kg. Average IBW: 56.2 kg. Healthy BMI Range Low: 49.2 kg. Healthy BMI Range High: 66.2 kg

With Sex = female and Height = 163 as the stated inputs, the result is Devine Formula = 55.1 kg, Robinson Formula = 56.1 kg and Miller Formula = 58.8 kg. Each value corresponds to the declared output fields.

Example 3: Tall Male — 6'3" (190 cm)

Inputs

sex: male height_cm: 190
Devine Formula: 84 kg. Robinson Formula: 80.1 kg. Miller Formula: 77.1 kg. Hamwi Formula: 88.1 kg. Average IBW: 82.3 kg. Healthy BMI Range Low: 66.8 kg. Healthy BMI Range High: 89.9 kg

With Sex = male and Height = 190 as the stated inputs, the result is Devine Formula = 84 kg, Robinson Formula = 80.1 kg and Miller Formula = 77.1 kg. Each value corresponds to the declared output fields.

Example 4: Short Female — 5'0" (152 cm)

Inputs

sex: female height_cm: 152
Devine Formula: 45.5 kg. Robinson Formula: 49 kg. Miller Formula: 53.1 kg. Hamwi Formula: 45.4 kg. Average IBW: 48.3 kg. Healthy BMI Range Low: 42.7 kg. Healthy BMI Range High: 57.5 kg

With Sex = female and Height = 152 as the stated inputs, the result is Devine Formula = 45.5 kg, Robinson Formula = 49 kg and Miller Formula = 53.1 kg. Each value corresponds to the declared output fields.
