About the Appliance Energy Cost Calculator
The calculator uses a multi formula configuration. Each reported value is read as a direct evaluation of the stored rules with the declared field formats and units.
Formula basis:
Daily kWh = watts / 1,000 x hours per day
Annual kWh = daily kWh x days per year
Annual cost = annual kWh x electricity rate ($/kWh)
Interpret the outputs in the order shown by the result fields. Optional inputs affect only the outputs that depend on those variables.
Formula & How It Works
The calculation applies the following relations exactly as recorded in the metadata: Daily kWh = watts / 1,000 x hours per day Annual kWh = daily kWh x days per year Annual cost = annual kWh x electricity rate ($/kWh) Each output field is produced by substituting the supplied inputs into the relevant relation and then applying the declared rounding or text format.
Worked Examples
Example 1: Central AC: 5,000W, 8 hrs/day, 120 days/year (summer), $0.16/kWh
Inputs
With Appliance = 5,000, Custom Wattage = 0, Hours Used per Day = 8 and Days Used per Year = 120 as the stated inputs, the result is Daily Energy Use = 40 kWh/day, Annual Energy Use = 4,800 kWh/year and Daily Electricity Cost = $6.4/day. Each value corresponds to the declared output fields.
Example 2: Electric dryer: 3,000W, 1.5 hrs/day, 150 days/year, $0.16/kWh
Inputs
With Appliance = 3,000, Custom Wattage = 0, Hours Used per Day = 1.5 and Days Used per Year = 150 as the stated inputs, the result is Daily Energy Use = 4.5 kWh/day, Annual Energy Use = 675 kWh/year and Daily Electricity Cost = $0.72/day. Each value corresponds to the declared output fields.
Example 3: Old refrigerator (500W avg) vs. new ENERGY STAR (150W), 24/7/365, $0.16/kWh
Inputs
With Appliance = 500, Custom Wattage = 0, Hours Used per Day = 24 and Days Used per Year = 365 as the stated inputs, the result is Daily Energy Use = 12 kWh/day, Annual Energy Use = 4,380 kWh/year and Daily Electricity Cost = $1.92/day. Each value corresponds to the declared output fields.
Example 4: EV Level 2 charger: 7,200W, 2 hrs/night, 300 days/year, $0.13/kWh (Texas)
Inputs
With Appliance = 7,200, Custom Wattage = 0, Hours Used per Day = 2 and Days Used per Year = 300 as the stated inputs, the result is Daily Energy Use = 14.4 kWh/day, Annual Energy Use = 4,320 kWh/year and Daily Electricity Cost = $1.872/day. Each value corresponds to the declared output fields.
