About the ACT Estimator

ACT Estimator is treated here as a quantitative relation between English Score, Math Score, Reading Score and Science Score and ACT Composite Score, Approximate Percentile, College Tier and Approximate SAT Equivalent.

The calculator uses a multi formula configuration. Each reported value is read as a direct evaluation of the stored rules with the declared field formats and units.

Formula basis:
ACT Composite = (English + Math + Reading + Science) / 4, rounded to nearest whole number

Interpret the outputs in the order shown by the result fields. Optional inputs affect only the outputs that depend on those variables.

Formula & How It Works

The calculation applies the following relations exactly as recorded in the metadata:

ACT Composite = (English + Math + Reading + Science) / 4, rounded to nearest whole number

Each output field is produced by substituting the supplied inputs into the relevant relation and then applying the declared rounding or text format.

Worked Examples

Example 1: Student: English 28, Math 31, Reading 27, Science 30

Inputs

english_score: 28 math_score: 31 reading_score: 27 science_score: 30
ACT Composite Score: 29. Approximate Percentile: Top 8% (92nd). College Tier: Selective (Top 50-100 universities). Approximate SAT Equivalent: 1,390

With English Score = 28, Math Score = 31, Reading Score = 27 and Science Score = 30 as the stated inputs, the result is ACT Composite Score = 29, Approximate Percentile = Top 8% (92nd) and College Tier = Selective (Top 50-100 universities). Each value corresponds to the declared output fields.

Example 2: Student: English 34, Math 35, Reading 33, Science 34

Inputs

english_score: 34 math_score: 35 reading_score: 33 science_score: 34
ACT Composite Score: 34. Approximate Percentile: Top 1% (99th). College Tier: Highly Selective (Top 25 universities). Approximate SAT Equivalent: 1,540

With English Score = 34, Math Score = 35, Reading Score = 33 and Science Score = 34 as the stated inputs, the result is ACT Composite Score = 34, Approximate Percentile = Top 1% (99th) and College Tier = Highly Selective (Top 25 universities). Each value corresponds to the declared output fields.

Example 3: Average student: English 19, Math 20, Reading 18, Science 21

Inputs

english_score: 19 math_score: 20 reading_score: 18 science_score: 21
ACT Composite Score: 20. Approximate Percentile: ~50th percentile. College Tier: Less Selective. Approximate SAT Equivalent: 1,090

With English Score = 19, Math Score = 20, Reading Score = 18 and Science Score = 21 as the stated inputs, the result is ACT Composite Score = 20, Approximate Percentile = ~50th percentile and College Tier = Less Selective. Each value corresponds to the declared output fields.

Example 4: SAT vs ACT decision: estimated ACT performance

Inputs

english_score: 25 math_score: 22 reading_score: 26 science_score: 23
ACT Composite Score: 24. Approximate Percentile: Top 29% (71st). College Tier: Moderately Selective (State universities). Approximate SAT Equivalent: 1,230

With English Score = 25, Math Score = 22, Reading Score = 26 and Science Score = 23 as the stated inputs, the result is ACT Composite Score = 24, Approximate Percentile = Top 29% (71st) and College Tier = Moderately Selective (State universities). Each value corresponds to the declared output fields.
